While many Americans associate over consumption of alcohol with New Year’s Eve, the holidays of the winter months often create opportunities for people the drink too much. Between holiday office parties, family gatherings, and winter snowmobiling, often people consume more alcohol than they intend to and try to drive home.

Below are some tips from our Ventura DUI attorney for how you can avoid a DUI this winter.

  • Plan ahead: If you are thinking of going out, make sure you plan ahead. In fact, most DUIs can be avoided if you only think ahead and make a plan. Consider arranging a friend or family member to be your designated driver, or make sure you have downloaded a rideshare app like Uber or Lyft.
  • Read the labels on medication: you can get a DUI for more than just driving under the influence of alcohol. Make sure to check the labels of any pain medication, anxiety medication or other over the counter or prescribed medication for warnings against drowsiness or driving.
  • Snowmobiles and ATVs count for DUIs: many people do not realize, you can get a DUI if you are driving a snowmobile or ATV while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you plan to spend a day out on the slopes or the dunes, avoid drinking
  • Don’t refuse a sobriety test: Driving is a privilege you are given by the government, by accepting the terms of your driver’s license; you essentially are giving your consent to DUI sobriety tests.
